Free mulch from the landfill went on top of the cardboard,
and it worked pretty good, except when Fen discovered
a great big pile of little sticks to chew on- and distribute throughout the yard!

The raised beds are filled with compost from the landfill.

The green beans are sprouting, the trellis is ready,
and we even have a soaker hose!

A few months later: the beans went crazy and shaded out the peppers,
and the lovely soaker hose was barely used because we got so much rain!

The tomatoes did well- and grew taller than we've ever seen (the huge cages helped).
